Its very simple!
dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config
Autohinter, Automatic, No
Or if you absolutely hate antialiased fonts, choose Native instead of Autohinter. And if you like unscaleable fonts that look nasty and disgusting, choose Yes for archaic bitmap fonts as the last question.

The font rendering was a bit below average in comparison to today's current offerings, but they weren't unacceptable.
But PLEASSSEEEE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT FOR NEXT VERSION. I hate it when friend's are turned off by the crunchy jagged fonts when they try surfing the web for the first time and then I have to go over and show them all they had to do was change the default setting. But of course, they wouldn't know you had to run dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config as a first time user or that you can even change it. |

i think damentz is right.
we can and have to aprove the default overall look of 2007-03 and find some font settings that will give a good default experience on crt & tft.

| I disagree with "Autohinter" and think "Native" should be chosen there. I agree the defaults can improve as per his suggestion. Will see what I can come up with . . . |

I think what should be done is the following:
- You/we should first define something like THE/ONE standard hardware, the most common.
- Then we should define a standard resolution and some standard software for exact this very standard hardware.
- Then we should open a thread where the font setting development is discussed / tested with only the people who_s hardware and software meets the above mentioned config.
- These people should test the default settings before each release.
- In future, the sidux start page on the live cd should show something like:
" default font setting optimised for 'this very common' hardware and 'that' standard progs and browsers. IF YOU have an other config and don't like the fonts you'll find help in chapter 'xyz' on how EASY to change some settings"
If you need testers for 17", nividia FX5200, res 1280x1024, (and font default probs only in browsers CONTENT window and nowhere else) feel free to contact me. |

That's the easy part, so lets do it right away:
- framebuffer: SMC cg6
- monitor: SUN GDM-20D10
- resolution: 1152*900 @77 Hz (meets german requirements for Bildschirmarbeitsplätze) |

| Yes as far as most common setups, most hardware seem to be closest to 96dpi or even higher. |

Hm, most of the sidux defaults are ok: This for example is a nv43 card (GF6600) using nvidia driver 97.55 (but looks the same with free nv driver), 1280x1024 @60hz on 19''-tft, 96dpi; fontconfig-config: native, subpixel-rendering automatic, bitmap fonts no.
Greetings,
Chris |

| I can only say that a lot of time and effort has gone into correcting reported font issues for next release. hopefully that will be obvious when we have our next round of release candidates. |
