A few of neat little tools that sidux has available and some cool reasons to run sidux.

Please take the time to READ:
sidux Manuals - Welcome-Quick-start after you install sidux.

Before you do anything take the time to READ the Manual manual that is over 200+ pages and the wiki, the manual is in many different languages, the wiki mostly in German or English. The Wiki is free to use and edit, by and for all sidux users.

As well as the new "sidux Meta Packages Manual"

Helpful apps/scripts:
If you are new to sidux it is highly recommended that you use smxi to do dist-upgrades, install new kernels, and to install video drivers.
http://techpatterns.com/forums/about736.html

smxi is no longer a part of sidux-scripts if you want to use it , you must install it manually.
"smxi" is as root: cd /usr/local/bin && wget techpatterns.com/smxi.zip && unzip smxi.zip && smxi:: To start, type, as root: smxi :: and follow the prompts :: script homepage - http://techpatterns.com/h2

kcontrol-autostart

* kding: KDE Tray app for ding.
* kirocker: Fullscreen Display (Partymode) for Amarok
* kio-sysinfo: KDE Kio Slave , that shows system informations

siduxcc (sidux-control-center)

ceni - Curses interface to /etc/network/interfaces
A Curses user interface for configuring network interfaces with ifupdown. Ceni can manage basic network interface ifupdown configuration stanzas for ethernet and wireless devices.

"sgfxi"- is ATI and nVidia binary graphics install. Update to latest:# sgfxi -U ; To see the options:# sgfxi -h ; Then go to init 3 and:# sgfxi

The meta-installer makes it easy to install some favorite packages, from games to other desktops.
install-meta: Install additional meta tasks to sidux. Frontend for installing additional meta tasks. Put the .bm to /usr/share/install-meta/ or use the --dir= option.

The upgrade warnings and fixes that keep Sid running like a charm. Warnings can be found in the forum, irc, by running sidux-hermes, or in siduxcc Software section.

Please don't forget:
Quote:
dist-upgrade" is Ctrl+Alt+F1 ; logon as root, type init 3 ; apt-get update ; apt-get dist-upgrade ; re-install 3d-drivers if xorg updated [sgfxi or smxi] +DO NOT DIST-UPGRADE [or UPGRADE] with aptitude or adept or synaptic+ *always* check Current Warnings on http://sidux.com/module-News.html and http://sidux.com/PNphpBB2-viewforum-f-29.html
Use apt-cache search or kio-apt in Konqueror to search for packages and please use only APT to install packages.
Important! Only use apt-get for package management

#sidux irc channel
sidux IRC Channels Guide (current)
http://sidux.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-767.html

The IRC channel can be join by running sidux-irc
Quote:
Start a suitable IRC client to enter #sidux
sidux-irc provides an easy way to choose a nickname and to enter the #sidux irc channel.
while in KDE or even in init 3. You need a text IRC client for it to work in init 3 like irssi or weechat-curses.

If someone asks you to paste something in the irc use:
"paste" is (#1) http://paste.debian.net/ : please choose no syntax highlighting; make your paste; click 'send', then give #sidux the link to your paste .., and (#2) you may prefer use sidux-paste -c command or sidux-paste file, and (#3) for images you can upload it under http://imagebin.org/index.php?page=add, and (#4) if you want to paste the clipboard content install xclip and use sidux-paste -x

infobash - System info script for irc
Infobash is a system information script for IRC (Internet Relay Chat) clients. A system information script can display all kinds of things about your hardware and software to users in a chatroom, so they can help you diagnose problems, ... or just marvel at your system specs and kernel version Wink It was created to serve the need for a infoscript that isn't dependent on a particular irc client. Because most irc clients support the /exec command, a script that runs with /exec would be most portable.

It is cool little things like the above that make running sidux so much fun. The various people in the forum and the IRC on irc.oftc.net:#sidux are all extremely helpful and patient.

Keep up the great work.

Thank you a lot for taking your time and gathering all those splendid tools in one place Smile
I let myself quote your post at my blog as there are many persons asking me what makes sidux so unique...
Thank you once again - kind friendly regards,
tami Smile

um, you should edit your first post mentioning the manual

Also, don't forget about the install-meta.

Let's remember more sidux tools and maybe this makes it as sticky

Well, if as tools we think something different that other distros don't have, I can think of netcardconfig and the other network tools. Also sux. I don't know how I could explain sux, and I think someone else can come out with a nice description.

craigevil: sorry for hackjacking your post. Probably not exactly what you had in mind when you started it.

Sux - Description: wrapper around su which will transfer your X credentials
Sux is a wrapper around the standard su command which will transfer
your X credentials to the target user.

Sux along with su-me or kdesu allow one as user to open GUI apps as root. Unlike sudo (the *buntu method) one must still supply the root password, which means someone can't just come along and type sudo and make changes to your system.

There lots of neat scripts like netcardconfig, fix-fonts, configure-cups,configure-screenres, ddcxinfo, infobash, etc that make things a little easier for us non-programmer/geeks. For all the cool packages from sidux just do apt-cache search sidux or open kio-apt and search sidux. While sidux is 100% Debian Sid there are lots of very helpful packages that the sidux devs have put together to make things a lot easy for the average user.

Quote:
sidux-scripts: Script collection for live and install uses on sidux.
/usr
/usr/sbin
/usr/sbin/du-fixes-h2.sh
/usr/sbin/fix-5b-mouse
/usr/sbin/fix-dpi-kdm
/usr/sbin/fix-ssh
/usr/sbin/fix-time
/usr/sbin/get-resume-partition
/usr/sbin/get-sidux-binary-gfx
/usr/sbin/masquerade
/usr/sbin/remove-gateway
/usr/sbin/remove-orphans
/usr/sbin/sgfxi
/usr/sbin/smxi
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/sidux-scripts
/usr/share/doc/sidux-scripts/changelog.gz
/usr/share/doc/sidux-scripts/copyright

Can't forget all the hard work slh does to keep the sidux kernel cutting edge. I just love to see a new kernel available when I run smxi.

Plus the easy that sidux is installled and how quick it installs, on most systems install only takes 6-10 minutes.

What distinguishes sidux from other distributions
Quote:
What distinguishes sidux from other distributions

Here you will find programs or scripts (or links to them), which make the difference when sidux is compared to other distributions

System administration

* smxi - sidux Maintenance∞ The swiss army knife integrated into sidux 2007-02 (Tartaros)
* get-sidux-binary-gfx - Downloading install-binary-gfx from the repositories
* install-binary-gfx - Automated installation of nvidia and ati binary graphic card drivers
* sidux-networkconfig - LAN and WLAN configuration

sidux is free and open source and comes with free & priceless 24/7 support via this forum and chat (the IRC). Our support staff is friendly, helpful and very highly skilled - some of them are developers of this operating system themselves, and others are accessible for complicated escalated support issues.

sidux is multilingual - people from all over the world meet here and speak their native language, but also second languages. We believe in the power of shared and open communication and therefore don't split the community by countries or languages, but concentrate them. Many people here do speak several languages and are using them when helping you. The manual, wiki, and IRC have many helpful people from different languages always ready to help out.
