I don't recall having my system unable to get to the prompt, but that's what is happening right now.

The update to the new kernel seems successful. Everything installed fine.

When I boot into the new kernel, the kernel cannot get past a certain point.

Disabling quiet mode, I notice that the last two things from the kernel are:

Code:

Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] attached SCSI removable disk

For the 2.6.24-2.6.24.2.slh.4-sidux-686 kernel, I normally get:

Code:

sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI disk

I think that the new kernel is confusing my sd/memorystick flash card reader as the boot disk.

In the kernel that works:

Code:

scsi 2:0:0:0: Direct-Access     Generic  Flash R/W        2002 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2
sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
sd 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0

Really depends how you bootloader and fstab refer to your "boot" disk. If they are using device nodes for that, then you are randomly screwed, depending on what devices are atatched. UUID's (or LABEL's) should be used to eliminate that as the cause of boot problem.

I am using UUIDs, so I guess that hypothesis is ruled out.

How do I go about finding what's wrong?

It looks like others (at least one Smile ) are having the same problem:

Maybe here is an example of why automatic kernel upgrades can be problematic.

Having installed the latest 2.6.24-2.6.24.2.slh.6-sidux-686 via smxi on reboot I got:

Code:
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbhid
drivers/hid/usbhid/hidcore.c: v2.6 USB core driver

Then a very long wait before:

Code:
Done
ALERT: /dev/hdc6 does not exist Dropping to a shell!
Check your root=boot argument (cat /proc/cmdline)
Check for missing modules (cat /proc/modules), or device files (ls /dev)

(cat /proc/cmdline) looks OK
(cat /proc/modules) I would not know what should be there
(ls /dev) doesn't show any HD partitions

It's difficult to list everything, I had to write it down by hand

My first thought was, as I was still using the old /dev/hdxx syntax for grub and fstab, i was finally forced to change that. So I booted the old kernel, modified menu.list and fstab according to the sidux manual (also changed grub's "kopt" line) using disk-by-label. All partitions were already labelled.

That made no difference except now it's /dev/disk/by-label/hdc6 does not exist! However the 2.6.23 still runs normally. Uninstall/reinstall of 2.6.24 (via smxi) gave the same results.

I have not dist-upgraded for 2 weeks because I have been away, now the current QT and other issues. Other posts, however, indicate the new kernel should install without.

There is a similar post:
http://www.sidux.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-8876.html

I also have VIA

It's a 3+ year old kanotix conversion; I like the "rolling release" idea and till now only minor problems upgrading.

So it's back to 2.6.23 till I resolve this. Any ideas?

Hiya,

...same problem here:

2.6.24-2.6.24.2.slh.4-sidux-686 boots fine whereas 2.6.24-2.6.24.2.slh.6-sidux-686 hangs for about two minutes before it drops to s shell:

    Loading, please wait...
ALERT ! /dev/disk/by-uuid/29a1c2a3-22b6-4d5b-9e29-ea2f8d29d1ee does not exist. Dropping to a shell
Check your root = Boot argument (cat /proc/cmdline)
Check for missing modules (cat /proc/modules) or device files (ls /dev).

The UUIDs have been checked for both root=XXXX command lines. They're absolutely identical. Trying a ls /dev on the shell results in a list that doesn't have the entry "/disk".
Doing a cat /proc/modules lists a number a number of loaded modules - hard to tell if a needed one is missing here.

Also did the update on another computer, which now can't be booted anymore. No matter which of the two mentioned kernel versions I choose, the boot process always gets stuck when starting either "hald" or "crond". Sometimes the HDD LED stays lit, sometimes it goes off, but the system hangs completely and needs the reset button to be restarted.

Can someone offer any help, please ?

Both
2.6.24-2.6.24.2.slh.4-sidux-686
and 2.6.24-2.6.24.2.slh.6-sidux-686
boot fine and so far with no apparent problems
on the new C2Duo 2.2Ghz w/ 2GB running 32bit sidux.

First of all, you must use UUIDs for fstab and root=UUID=xxx in menu.lst these days or it will break every other kernel upgrade. Given that there were some regressions reported against the PATA_VIA (libata) drivers in earlier kernel 2.6.24 revisions, we reverted back to BLK_DEV_VIA82CXXX (which has been the default for all previous kernels). Now we do need feedback, PATA_VIA would be preferred - but BLK_DEV_VIA82CXXX should work as it always did (and I cannot reproduce any problems with KT133, KM133a, KT266 and KT600).

Feedback required, but only if you are sure that you are using UUIDs and please post your "lspci -nn" output.

Same problem here. I'm using UUIDs:
Quote:
title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.24-2.6.24.2.slh.6-sidux-686 Default
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=UUID=61491248-8b88-4b3c-a5dc-ffe3f5e6385e ro quiet vga=791 SELINUX_INIT=NO
initrd /boot/initrd.img

And lspci -nn gives:
Quote:
00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133] [1106:0305] (rev 03)

00:07.3 USB Controller [0c03]: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller [1106:3038] (rev 16)
00:07.4 Bridge [0680]: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super ACPI] [1106:3057] (rev 40)

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400/G450 [102b:0525] (rev 82)

Any further tests I can do with this box?

Problem here also:

Code:

ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/243.... does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
Check your root= boot argument (cat proc/cmdline)
Check for missing modules (cat /proc/modules), or device files (ls /dev)

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5) Built-in shell

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off (initramfs)

the laptop had sidux on it and was completely reinstalled by CD.

Should you require more infos let me know.
