"soon" := after etch is final, sid is currently under a "no disruptive changes" (and new upstream versions for libraries are disruptive in this sense) policy.

Perhaps someone might build an unofficial debian package for this

here a brief howto:
add following lines to /etc/apt/sources.list:
Code:
deb http://debian.corsac.net unstable/
deb-src http://debian.corsac.net unstable/
and run this commands:
Code:
apt-get -t experimental install libgtk2.0-dev
apt-get install chrpath
apt-get -b source gtk2-engines-xfc
dpkg -i gtk2-engines-xfce_2.4.0-1_i386.deb
apt-get install xfce4
attention: this howto use experimental sources! that's dangerous!
note: gimp and krita will be removed |

XFCE 4.4 looks great, I worked with the pre-release. It is nice and quick and has many nice features.

@Xadras: Better wait to see if 4.4 makes it into official repo
