I have upgraded to 2.6.28-0.slh.3-sidux-686 but found as soon as I do, the sound subsystem is no longer working...
Under 2.6.27-10.slh.1-sidux-686 sound works perfectly..
Please see text conversation with towo|...
===============================================
<x3dre> I've just upgraded via smxi & the 2.6.28-0.slh.3-sidux-686 kernel but still this kernel is not allowing the sound subsystem to play... Sound plays fine in the 2.6.27x kernel.. :o
<Heinervdm> x3dre: i had to do alsaconf today to get audio running
<x3dre> Heinervdm, I have run alsaconf and still the sound doesn't work :o
<x3dre> Heinervdm, is there anything else I could try ?
<towo|> !ctell x3dre dowo
<aynoS> x3dre: "dowo" is 'it doesnt work' is not a bugreport. please be precise and paste the full error message to a !pastebin ::or use; sidux-paste -c 'command':: or see !paste. Have you already searched the forum: http://tinyurl.com/28l2rn
<towo|> x3dre: sidux-paste -c "lspci | grep -i audio"
<x3dre> ok - np :)
<towo|> x3dre: sidux-paste -c "lsmod | grep snd"
<x3dre> towo|, http://rafb.net/p/pEDSNf47.html
<x3dre> towo|, http://rafb.net/p/YIdzpC98.html
<towo|> x3dre: grep Codec /proc/asound/card0/codec#0
<x3dre> towo|, Codec: SigmaTel STAC9271D
<towo|> x3dre: also does not know this codec
<towo|> alsa
<towo|> x3dre: have you ever had sound?
<x3dre> towo|, in the 2.6.27 kernel it works fine... :o
<x3dre> towo|, so sonething in this latest kernel is missing
<x3dre> something
<x3dre> towo|, I'll reboot into the 2.6.27 and test these commands you just gave me :)
<towo|> x3dre: the output will be the same
<towo|> x3dre: alsa is running
<x3dre> towo|, so something in this kernel has broken the sound ... alsa-utils is running in rcconf
<towo|> x3dre: all modules ar loaded, so theoretical sound works
<towo|> x3dre: tell it to slh, alsa is in ther kernel
<x3dre> slh_, are you there ?

hi
we chatted on irc and my first attempts were a fail
so now try this
I have found this link
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6589810
You only need to download the one file
Attached Files
File Type: tar AlsaUpgrade-1.0.x-rev-1.16.tar (20.0 KB, 1267 views)
Note this version will change.
2) after unpack I run it with root powers like this
Code:
sh /pathway/AlsaUpgrade-1.0.x-rev-1.16.sh -di
but if you know your cards you can tweak it.
change -di to -h for help
I believe the -snap version means svn or cvs style.
3) You can see the install log in /var/log/alsa*.log
here is mine
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?olo4wdyjzkn
398 kilobytes
4) then pls reboot
then as per wiki run the alsa-info.sh from your home folder and read the text
here is mine
18 kilobytes
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?mmcmwywhdy2
with the key info that
Driver version: 1.0.19
Library version: 1.0.19
Utilities version: 1.0.19
5) then run your mixer...alsamixer or kmix etc to unmute or raise volumes.
6) Please have a backup or know there is a reset function in script |

I am due to do a DU this weekend so won't post my alsa-info.sh quite yet.
2) but running a xxdiff against yours and mine have the main following diffs:
1) my artsd is running yours not
(kcontrol /sound&multimedia /sound /enable sound with suspend to 0 seconds
2) The end of my success installing the "Debian" way using module-assistant only gave me
Driver version: 1.0.19
Library version:
Utilities version: 1.0.16
I think this is because you tried the ubuntu script and then the m-a way, whereas I restored an image before attempting the m-a way and so did not update my util version and no idea why lib version is missing compared to yours...but I have sound in new k.
3) and the real biggie IMHO is your .asoundrc
me thinks it not quite correct based on the alsa-project page for it
Can I suggest you make a copy of current file by renaming it to .asoundrc-old
b) copy and paste following and make it executable
------------------------------------------snip-------------------------
#!/bin/bash
# asoundrc v0.1.0 20090101 markc@renta.net GPLv3
#
# A simple script to create a particular default audio device regardless
# of what cards are loaded or in what order. It could be used anytime or
# placed in a ~/.bashrc script for a persistent setup every login.
#
# Usage: asoundrc [DEFAULT_CARD] > ~/.asoundrc
DEFAULT_CARD=XFi
[ -n "$1" ] && DEFAULT_CARD=$1
export DEFAULT_CARD
cat /proc/asound/cards | \
sed -n "s/.*\[\([a-zA-Z0-9]*\).*\].*/pcm.\1 { type hw; card \1; }\nctl.\1 { type hw; card \1; }/p" | \
awk '{print} END {print "pcm.!default pcm."ENVIRON["DEFAULT_CARD"]"\nctl.!default ctl."ENVIRON["DEFAULT_CARD"]}'
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
lets name it /home/yourname/createasnd?
run it in with command similar to (non-root is fine)
Code:
./createasnd > /home/gordy/.asoundrc
compare it to old copy, and at this stage don't try for surround etc but just see if we get sound into new k pls?
needs a nice reboot so you can hear if funny sound still there?
4) my codec is diff from yours so can offer no help there either
5) it has been suggested to me in irc...to still try running
alsaconf
6) also as we are just trying for sound how about moving the asoundrc file out of home and rebooting?
(this was editted to explain diff in version numbers and other stuff) |

And IMHO when you DU and are still keeping the k 2.6.27 series...the stuff you have done with the ubuntu script and m-a
can be ignored as you need to run that stuff against each working kernel eh? |
