This Wiki is free to use and edit by and for all sidux users. We hope the sidux documentation will grow over time and develop along with this project.
We hope for contributions from Linux users of all knowledge levels, since this wiki is intended to help users of all levels. The few minutes you donate to our wiki can save other users (and maybe yourself) in need of solutions, hours of trouble and searching.
To write your own article you only need to have a little more Linux-experience than is already documented in the wiki.
You also need to be a registered user. You can add your own conclusions or edit articles you feel should be expanded or corrected. Good documentation is essential for all of us, so we ask that you respect a few rules before writing.

We love Debian Sid (aka "Unstable") and believe in it's innovative power. It is by far the largest, most secure and up-to-date software repository available. Unfortunately, the Debian installer does not support Sid and upgrading from either Testing or Stable to Sid can be painful and demanding. Using debootstrap to create a Sid system leaves the average user with headaches and a lot of additional work to do by hand.
That is where sidux jumps in. We plan to provide 3 or 4 carefully balanced Sid snapshots each year, together with easy and fast installation options (from iso files, but probably also using other technologies such as scripts together with netinstall or cdebootstrap). We enrich the distribution with a properly patched version of the most recent kernels, improved hardware detection, ready to go drivers, helpful scripts and anything we think is useful. We strive to package properly and contribute all our suitable work back to Debian.
We understand sidux is a base system for further customisations and adaptations to special needs (laptop, desktop, server or special purpose workstation). It can be used in private and corporate surroundings and makes a fine platform for appliances. It will always remain a 100% Debian Sid compatible system.
h2 can probably provide a script for these things and draw them from a separate server, if everybody here can live with that.
Useful pages: FormattingRules, WikkaDocumentation, OrphanedPages, WantedPages, TextSearch, SandBox.

Hier greift Sidux ein. That's where sidux jumps in.

sidux is an operating system based on the Linux kernel, Debian's most modern branch (called "Sid") and additional free and open source applications as well.
We love Debian Sid (aka "Unstable"), believe in it's innovative power and demand it's actuality. It's by far the biggest, most secure and up-to-date software repository available. However, the Debian installer does not support Sid, and upgrading from Testing (or Stable) to Sid can be demanding and painful. To debootstrap a Sid system leaves the average user with headaches and a lot of additional work to do by hand. Other fine distributions unfortunately have recently stopped to base on Debian Sid.
That's where sidux jumps in. We provide 3-4 times a year a carefully balanced Sid snapshot, together with easy and fast installation paths (on iso-files, but probably also using other technologies, i.e. scripts together with netinstall or cdebootstrap). We enrich the distribution with proper patched most recent kernels, improved hardware detection, ready to go drivers, helpful scripts and whatever we think is useful. We are striving to properly package and contribute all our suitable work back to Debian.
We understand sidux as a base system for further customizations and adaptions to special needs (laptop, desktop, server, special purpose workstation). It can be used in private and corporate surroundings and makes a fine platform for appliances. It will always remain a 100% Debian Sid compatible system.
Our relation to Debian is being part of it, contributing to it and making use of it. We also co-operate with other open source projects who share our interests. Working together with commercial/corporate/governmental entities is not excluded and might be possible for sidux, but is not planned at this very early stage of development.

We simply think that the GPL is the only acceptable license we like to use. Compatible licensing is ok, however. We still need to talk about dual-licensing.
Because they are not free, not open sourced, or otherwise legally/technically problematic for us.
We need to talk about that, too.

What is sidux? Why sidux?
Relations to Debian and other projects?
Who overtakes which responsibilities?
Where do we wanna be in 3, 6, 12, 24 months?
How do we think about using the GPL?
Why do we not include non-GPL packages and non-free content?
How are we going to help people with common commercial stuff?

Welcome to the sidux wiki
Here the first ideas:
Who undertakes which responsibilities?
Please add here your user name and tasks/areas where you feel you can/want help us. Responsibilities are decided in a democratic and unbureaucratic style at sidux.- devil offers support for the masses on irc & forum, administer the forum, news, translations (in the future maybe packaging, just learnig that the debian way)

- bluewater - Documentation Structure and 'that worked - oops that didnt work testing'
- Bodhi-Baum can make translation, documentation and looks out for new and usefull software
- hjt - vdr (video disc recording)
- RoEn - testing, wiki documention, support for dvbx
- slam does whatever is needed - organisation, PR, web master, design, dokumentation and translation, some coding, ...
- bfree - testing and hacking (perl, bash, c, php, whatever) and klik (make fullstory package suitable for sidux and add any server support intelligence)
- piper offers shared support (with devil) for the masses on irc & forum, translations (in the future maybe packaging, just learning, and want to learn)
- Richard - proofread most anything in English or Spanish. Point me to what you need. Testing.
- LessWire - coding in c, php, basics in bash, some experience in remastering, admin of a dedicated server

Because they are not free, not open sourced, or otherwise legally/technically problematic for us. We love Debian Sid (aka "Unstable") and believe in its innovative power. It is by far the biggest, most secure and up-to-date software repository available. Unfortunately the Debian installer does not support Sid and upgrading from Testing (or Stable) to Sid can be painful and demanding. Using debootstrap to create a Sid system leaves the average user with headaches and a lot of additional work to do by hand. That is where sidux jumps in. We provide 3-4 carefully balanced Sid snapshots each year, together with easy and fast installation options (from iso files, but probably also using other technologies such as scripts together with netinstall or cdebootstrap).

How do we think about using the GPL?
We simply think that the GPL is the only acceptable license we like to use. Compatible licensing is ok, however. We still need to talk about dual-licensing.Why do we not include non-GPL packages and non-free content?

(ja, es gibt eins ;-)) This is though as a playground for finding common goals, milestones and definitions for the project. Please understand it as an internal sandbox, where we can play with ideas - no beautification necessary ;-).Hier erste Ideen:
Was ist sidux?
That's where sidux jumps in.
Our relation to Debian is being part of it, contributing to it and making use of it. We also co-operate with other open source projects who share our interests. Working together with commercial/corporate/governmental entities is not excluded and might be possible for sidux, but is not planned at this very early stage of development.
bluewater∞ Dokumentation, Struktur und 'that worked - oops that didnt work testing'
12 Monate ...
24 Monate ...
48 Monate --> Weltweite Bekanntheit ;-)
Edited on 2006-11-27 13:55:54 by hjt

Working together with commercial/corporate/governmental entities is also possible and not excluded for sidux, but not appropriate at this early stage of development.

We love Debian Sid (aka "Unstable") and believe in it's innovative power and actuality. It is by far the biggest, most secure up-to-date software repository available. However, the Debian installer is not really ready for a Sid HDD-install, and upgrading from Testing (or Stable) to Sid can be demanding and painful. Other fine distributions have stopped to base on Debian Sid. To debootstrap a Sid system leaves the average user with headaches and a lot of additional work to do by hand. That's where sidux jumps in. We provide 3-4 times a year carefully balanced sid snapshots together with easy and fast installation paths (on iso-files, probably also using other technologies, i.e. scriptage together with netinstall or cdebootstrap.

Relations to Debian and other projects?
Who overtakes which responsibilities?
Where do we wanna be in 3, 6, 12, 24 months?
How do we think about using the GPL?
Why do we not include non-GPL packages and non-free content?
How are we going to help people with common commercial stuff?

Welcome to the sidux wiki (yes, there is one)
This is though as a playground for finding common goals, milestones and definitions for the project. Please understand it as an internal sandbox, where we can play with ideas - no beautification necessary ;-).
